WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER The Crew Member is a staff member of the Stewardship and Field Programs Department (SAF) of TNC's Florida Chapter. SAF is responsible for implementing and managing field conservation work across Florida and for stewardship of the Florida Chapter's network of preserves. TNC's Central Florida preserves are part of the statewide Center for Conservation Initiatives (CCI) and include Tiger Creek Preserve, Disney Wilderness Preserve, Saddle-blanket Scrub, and Venus Flatwoods. These preserves and this position are integral to CCI and its mission. The Crew Member performs and participates in land management efforts with an emphasis on these TNC preserves and with conservation partners in the surrounding landscape. They are responsible for ensuring that all stewardship related activities comply with TNC's, local, state, and federal requirements. They serve as part of SAF's Central Florida Program (CFL) team and are supervised by the Land Conservation Manager.Nearly all of Florida's ecosystems depend on fire for essential ecological functions. The Central Florida Ecosystem Restoration Team supports fire management activities across diverse ecosystems, agencies, and organizations in the Central Florida region to achieve fire management goals, promoting ecosystem health and public safetyTogether, we can increase the number of acres treated, gain experience, and have a positive influence on natural habitats and the communities surrounding them. Specifically, we will support The Nature Conservancy and partner organizations throughout Central Florida achieve their fire management goals. WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU You will represent The Nature Conservancy's Central Florida Ecosystem Restoration Team (ERT) in the places you work. Your attitude and fire practitioner skills will be important as we prepare fire lines, maintain equipment, conduct pre- and post-burn monitoring, and do other prescribed fire related tasks. You may perform other land management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire. We will ask you to serve in roles commensurate with your qualification and experience. As a full-time prescribed fire crew member, you will participate in continuous prescribed fire assignments throughout a six-month term beginning January 9th ,2023 and ending June 30th. The ERT will be housed at The Disney Wilderness Preserve and work will be performed on TNC Preserves and partner lands throughout Central Florida.The intent of this position is to provide support for prescribed fire operations on conservations lands throughout Central Florida. This is a full time, seasonal, hourly wage position, and overtime applies after the first 40 hours each week. Housing (private bedroom w/shared kitchen/bath) will be provided at the Disney Wilderness Preserve.Burn crew members will be expected to:Perform tasks under the supervision of the Land Conservation Manager and under direction from the Burn Crew Manager. Ensure safe work practices. Assist with all aspects of prescribed burning. Maintain assigned equipment. Maintain accurate records of work time, expenses, etc. and submit reports in a timely manner. Work as team player. Operate ATVs, UTVs, tractors, chain saws, and leaf blowers and tow trailers. Be able to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Achieve physical fitness standards; able to pass the arduous level pack-test 3 mile walk with 45 lbs. in 45 minutes. Be vaccinated for COVID 19 in accordance with The Nature Conservancy's COVID 19 policy. WHAT YOU'LL BRING Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and 2 years related work experience or Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (FFT1) with high school diploma. Must achieve physical fitness standards as set by local Fire Manager and TNC Fire Manual. Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment. Experience supervising staff or volunteers. Ability to obtain related licenses and certifications such as CPR and herbicide application as required. A valid driver's license and good driving record. Must be able to comply with The Nature Conservancy's COVID-19 vaccination policy.Desired QualificationsMulti-lingual skills and multicultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. Experience operating various types of equipment including chainsaws. Previous experience in prescribed fire activities. Ability and willingness to follow instructions from colleagues.
