This position is to serve as a technical expert including, but not limited to lighting design, master carpentry, and master electrician responsibilities. Performs responsibilities and skilled technical work in support of a large performing arts facility with a high volume of performances, and events, both internal and external. Work is governed by both broad, as well as specific instructions and objectives involving frequently changing conditions, problems, and opportunities
Essential Duties

  • Operates, maintains, and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
  • Stays apprised of current safety regulations (OSHA & USITT) and ensures such regulations are adhered to by internal and external facility users.
  • Monitors the condition of theatre equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging. Arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance and coordinates inspections on equipment
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and assigns volunteer and/or paid technical staff for individual shows according to role in production and skill set.
  • Designs, installs, maintains, and operates lighting and sound systems, including but not limited to: theatre, music, dance, and other productions and projects (both external and internal to Polk State College); assists guest designers and artists with technical matters.
  • Orients facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations; assists the arts program manager with the use of the technical facilities by internal users and others renting the facility.
  • Consults as needed with internal and external facility users, production managers, and lighting and sound designers about technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for individual shows, and scenery design. Supervises the implementation of approved technical designs.
  • Supervise the design and building of scenery for various internal theatrical productions including full production plays and musicals, as well as black box performances.
  • Supervise and/or assign load-in and load-out of theatrical equipment while ensuring the adherence to safety protocols.
  • Attends technical rehearsals to supervise the technical aspects of productions.
  • Supervise the distribution of tools and equipment to be used in theatrical and musical productions at Polk State College.
  • Assists with the preparation and control of facility and production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies.
  • Researches and makes recommendations to the arts program manager regarding capital purchases of needed technical equipment.
  • Inspects facility for cleanliness and safe auditorium accessibility and operations to ensure for a world-class experience for patrons

    Note: This position will have a late spring (May/June 2023) start date.

    • Knowledge of applicable College, state, and federal employment regulations pertaining to the hiring, training, compensation, retention, and evaluation of personnel including but not limited to the Federal Wage and Hour Law, 1964 Civil Rights Act and Civil Rights Act of 1991, Americans with Disabilities Act, Immigration Reform Act, and other related laws.

      Required Education:
      Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent professional experience.

      Required Experience

      Experience in technical theatrical production or construction required.
      Four years of skilled work experience in technical theatrical production and supervision supplemented by a working knowledge of electrical and construction techniques. An equivalent of training and experience may be substituted.
